How I Co-Wrote a Tribute Song to My Mom: A Mother’s Day Special

Mother's Day holds a special place in our hearts; this year, it’s particularly meaningful for me. I'm thrilled to share the journey of co-writing a tribute song for my mom, a project that’s been both healing and memorable.

In 2019, Richard Casper invited me to a songwriting retreat as part of his non-profit programming, CreatiVets. At the time, I was dual-hatting, serving as his social-media volunteer. But, I was fortunate enough to participate in a songwriting session with top songwriters as a result of that trip, and as a result of that song, my life changed - for the better.

A Journey of Catharsis and Tribute

The process of writing this song was incredibly cathartic. Losing my mom was one of the hardest things I've ever gone through. Pouring my emotions into music helped me navigate the grief. Songwriting allowed me to express my feelings in a way that felt both therapeutic and meaningful. Creating something beautiful from such deep pain has been a transformative experience.

“I Love You the Mostest” Lyrics

Auburn Elementary, back in 1993

Pulled up in a Dodge caravan

Still holding tight to Mama’s hand

First day of first grade

She could see scared on my face

Trying to act tough, yeah I even prayed

Jesus couldn’t save the day

But Mama had a way with words

And these are the words I heard

Come here, give me some loving

This ain’t nothing

I’ll be waiting on the other side

I’m proud of you, baby

I miss you like crazy

Everything’s gonna be alright

Just hold on tight; never let go

I hope that you know

I love you the mostest

A few years into college

That’s when I got the calling

To wear the cloth of the nation

So I was headed off to basic

Nothing could prepare me for anything that I was gonna see

Mama didn’t want me to leave, but she still believed in me

Mama had a way with words

And these are the words I heard

Come here, give me some loving

This ain’t nothing

I’ll be waiting on the other side

I’m proud of you, baby

I miss you like crazy

Everything’s gonna be alright

Just hold on tight; never let go

I hope that you know it

Yeah, I love you the mostest

Yeah, I love you the mostest

Since 2011

She’s been dancing up in heaven

She’s probably smiling from ear to ear

Having herself a nice cold beer

When I bust through the pearly gates

You know exactly what she’ll say

Come here, give me some loving

Ain’t this something

Been waiting on the other side

I’m proud of you, baby

I’ve missed you like crazy

Everything’s gonna be alright

You’ve held on tight; you never let go

I know that you love me

Yeah, I love you the mostest

Yeah, I love you the mostest

Gratitude and Collaboration

I am immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in bringing this song to life. Richard Casper and CreatiVets, first and foremost -- their mission to bring healing to veterans brought healing to this veteran. The support has been instrumental in helping my mom's memory live on through this music.

CreatiVets is the nonprofit organization that made this possible. CreatiVets works tirelessly to help veterans like myself cope with service-related trauma through the creative arts. I was told my mom had cancer about 2 weeks before I was leaving for basic and, though not service-related from a line of duty perspective, laying in a bunk several states away, processing the fact that my mom was actively dying was trauma enough for this song to serve as a vehicle to help me find a bit of light. Collaborating with talented individuals who understood my vision was crucial. Anthony and Brent are magical humans full of talent from head to toe. From the first chord to the final recording, each person involved brought their unique touch to the project, making it a true labor of love. Their dedication and passion shine through in every note and lyric.

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

Releasing this song in May is especially significant as it aligns with Mental Health Awareness Month. My mom lived during a time when great shame was associated with navigating the challenges of mental and emotional health. As we release this song, I also want to highlight an important issue that affects many veterans. Statistics show that veteran suicide, anxiety, and depression are alarmingly high. The trend is being reversed by initiatives like those by CreatiVets are crucial in providing veterans with the support they need to heal and thrive. Music and other creative outlets offer a powerful way to process emotions and connect with others who share similar experiences.
